How to Navigate Michigan Unemployment Website (MIWAM): COVID-19 Update; May 2020

The work search requirement is about to restart in Michigan – meaning unemployed people must prove they’re looking for work if they want to keep getting benefits.

The requirement was halted in March 2020 when the pandemic started. The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency hasn’t been enforcing it since.

But starting sometime “soon,” the UIA will begin enforcing it again, it said on its website. The UIA hasn’t set an exact date, but said it will become mandatory again sometime in late May.

The work search requirement applies to everyone on unemployment, including state and federal programs.

“We are currently working on system changes to accommodate statutory changes, federal benefit programs that were implemented and ensure that claimants who certify by phone are able to timely submit their work search information,” UIA spokesperson Lynda Robinson said in an email. “The availability of the COVID-19 vaccine and the reopening of workplaces offers an opportunity for people to be able to return safely to work.”

There were 700,000 Michiganders claiming unemployment for the week of April 17, all while employers complain of a widespread worker shortage. Some groups have called for Michigan to stop accepting all federal unemployment benefits, including the extra $300 per week.

To satisfy the work search requirement, applicants must report one “work search activity” per week. That includes applying for jobs in person or uia online certification, attending job fairs or employment workshops or searching job listings on websites like Monster.com, LinkedIn or MITalent.org.

The UIA will ask when and how you applied for each job and ask for the company’s contact information.

Lately, some employers have had issues with “ghost applicants,” who apply for a job, but never show up for an interview – as they only apply to satisfy the requirement.

Some people can get a waiver to avoid having to prove a work search, but the UIA hasn’t explained yet uia online certification can get a waiver.

Watch uia online certification email and MiWAM account for more details in the coming weeks, the UIA says.

(June 5, 2021 2:46 PM) The Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) has reintroduced a call-in schedule to simple bank number all claimants who certify their eligibility for benefits by phone. The call-in schedule, based on the last two digits of an individual’s Social Security Number (SSN), will help ease incoming call flow and prevent extended wait times while reporting work search activity by phone.

“Although certifying and reporting your work search activity online is quicker and more efficient, this call-in schedule will make it easier for those who may not have online access.” said Liza Estlund Uia online certification, UIA acting director.

Claimants who receive unemployment benefits are required to search for uia online certification and report at least one work search activity per week when they certify for benefits. Failure to report a work search activity will result in a loss of benefits for that week.

All claimants who certify by phone will need to call according to the schedule. Claimants who need to report their work search activity must complete the automated certification questions and remain on the line to connect with an agent to report their work search activity for each week.

    Beginning Monday, June 7, 2021:

The certification day and uia online certification will correspond with the last two digits of a claimant’s Social Security Number (SSN). When certifying by phone using MARVIN (866-638-3993), claimants must certify on their scheduled day and time.

If unable to certify on their scheduled day and time, all claimants may certify on Thursday or Friday of their certification week, regardless of their SSN.

MARVIN is available from 8 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, but is no longer available on Saturdays.

For faster processing, UIA recommends that claimants certify and report their work search online using the Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM). MiWAM is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Claimants may sign up for a MiWAM account at Michigan.gov/uia.

A waiver of the work search requirement may be granted due to certain COVID-19 related reasons. Claimants must apply and be approved for the waiver before they certify for benefits for the bi-weekly certification period. Claimants will be notified at the time of the request whether a waiver of the requirement is granted.

For more information on the work search requirement, visit Michigan.gov/uia.
